Hello hello!

Anchorage has been unusually hot this summer, it's about 75 right now and  been in the 70s or 80s almost everyday...we're not used to this but I guess I shouldn't complain.  It snowed about 6in the day before I came home which meant we couldn't get out to our cabin for Memorial Day (the lake was still frozen and Tanner was still on crutches from his back-flip on nordic skis mishap) so we went down to Seward instead.  Seward is a cute little town a few hours south of Anchorage, a lot of people fish from there and it's the home of the terrifying 4th of July Mt. Marathon mountain running race.  My favorite part about Seward is the freakin awesome SeaLife center!! I hadn't been there in so long but you get to see seals and sealions and all sorts of things super close!  And touch starfish and all sorts of other little creatures.

My summer hasn't been too exciting.  Lots of training and I'm working for a flying service company, which means lots of interesting/difficult/awesome tourists.  Also, I went on one of our flights out over the mountains and to Prince William Sound and it was gorgeous!

Caitlin had a wonderful and very Alaskan experience. She was here for a week and we went hiking in the snow, saw lots of moose and bears, had almost 20 hours of daylight, went out to the cabin and had all sorts of adventures. And she met Teagan!

I'm so sad I won't see all of you for so long but I'm also FUCKING PUMPED to go to Europe!!  I have my ticket to Hungary and then when we get to Hungary we're actually headed to Spain for 5 days before orientation starts! (just bought the tickets to Spain and I'm super excited if you couldn't tell, but I need to work on my Spanish before then)

I hope everyone is having an awesome summer. POST, PEOPLE, POST! I want to know your lives!  Izzo I'm glad you're having such a blast in France and Annika I hope the wedding was fabulous :)

Skiing in June!

Alrighty then, I guess it is my turn to add to the blog!  So far my summer has been really great!  I just got back from a ski camp in Bend, Oregon with my club team, BNJRT.  Bend is a really amazing place to train because it has tons of beautiful running and mountain biking, lots of rollerskiing, and SNOW!  Basically everyday of our two week trip was filled with training, walking around downtown, and hanging out by the river.  Now for a few adventure stories…

#1
So although I had never mountain biked in my life before, I decided to give it a shot in Bend.  This “learning experience” mostly consisted of me falling…on downhills, on uphills, on flats, while not even moving.  I somehow managed to make it home in one piece, but I would say my mountain biking skills are still seriously lacking.

Enjoying some amazing views at Smith Rock

 #2
Another one of our adventures in Bend was epic cliff jumping sessions!  The large river that runs through Bend was fairly close to our condo so on many evenings we would go for a short jog, jump off the cliff into ice cold water, and jog home for dinner.  The cliff saw lots of backflips, frontflips, and belly flops (ouch!)  Below are some pictures of Kelsey Phinney (she skis for Middlebury) and I jumping in together.

#3
The greatest part of the trip was getting to ski in June!  Because much of the snow at the Nordic center melted during the first week of our trip, we spent the majority of our trip skiing on a short loop at the top of Mount Bachelor.  While this situation was not ideal, it allowed us to be on snow for two full weeks!  My team and I were so lucky to have this amazing opportunity and owe a great deal of thanks to Ski and Snowboard Club Vail and Team Homegrown.

So I think that is all for now, I miss you all and I hope you are all having amazing summers!

Bonjour mes amis!!

Hi Everyone!

I hope your summers are simply fantastic and you are enjoying the warm weather.  Class, adventures, and life in general in Grenoble, France are going very well, each day brining about a new excursion!  Conducting life in French is quite exhilarating!  When I arrived, I rented a bicycle to get around the city.....it has a basket on the front and tall handle bars.  I feel like the wicked witch from the Wizard of Oz when I ride around but the entire city uses them so it's not really weird haha

Of my many adventures, 3 are the most note-worthy for the moment, so voilĂ , they are below!

One day, I biked about 2 hours outside the city, found a mountain road, and pushed my bike up for a long time until I came some houses and a stupendous view of the Alps.  My goal of the day was to get as close to the big, snowy mountains as possible so I just kept following the roads that looked as if they would take me there!  I ended up in a gorgeous mountain valley surrounded by mountains and was very excited, hence the picture of me jumping up and down :P

Another adventurous morning, I left on a bus to go visit a monastery embedded in the heart of the Alps.  I went alone, and after visiting the "La Grande Chartreuse" museum, I decided to take the mountain trail to be able to see the monastery from above.  It was stunning, silently existing in a valley surrounded by huge mountains!  I then decided to keep following the hiking trails, as I could see in front of me a ginormous mountain and I wanted to get to the top.  So, I kept going until I was almost out of time.....I didn't make it to the top b/c I took a bit of a wrong turn and ended up on a grass/gravel slope on the edge of the mountain (near the top but not quite haha).  So I ate lunch on a rock in the middle of this amazingness, not at the summit and not on the trail, but it didn't matter!  Below are a few of the pictures from that excursion (and I even found some snow)!

Finally, a few days ago I rollerskied up a mountain road to the town of Vercours.  The road is all uphill and after 1:48 of climbing, I was at the top....it was 95 degrees so I was so glad that I found a water fountain up there!  The rocks, mountains, and view of Grenoble were stunning in the afternoon sun.  However, I had no idea how I was going to get down because it was not even minutely possible to ski down.....believe it or not, I hitch-hiked!  And within 10 minutes, someone pulled over for me....a young guy who was smoking, driving an old camping truck (which is his house), and had a fake rat on the dashboard.  He was luckily very, very nice and he drove me down....I don't think that was the smartest of choices but it got me back down near the city quite quickly haha.  Below are a few pictures:

And....a picture of my bike haha.

Anyway, that is a recap of my adventures in the Alps!  I hope you are all doing fantabulous and I miss you all tons and tons!!

Full time athlete/part time hippie

Hi all my wildkittens!

Thanks anne and izzo for getting this off the ground. Psyched to see what everyone is doing over the summer!!

As for me, I'm up at Craftsbury permanently now, I moved in about 3 weeks ago but it has been flying by with training and work! I basically just get my butt whooped in every workout and then go do fun hippie stuff the rest of the time like plant veggies, play with baby goats, and sauna in this really cool wood fired sauna back in the woods. It's so gorgeous up here during the summer, Erik even you would think so!

Training is going really well though, I know everyone is in that transition time where we're getting back into full time training after a crazy spring, but I just have to keep reminding myself that every workout will get easier and easier. Okay maybe not skate rollerskiing, haha my nemesis.

I don't have any pictures yet from up in Craftsbury, but I do have a few from my trip to Burlington to see Dana and Kelsey this past weekend. We hiked the Camel's Hump and hung by the waterfront on a really nice day, so I guess this post is a reminder that we should enjoy summer while it lasts, and every once in a while hang up the rollerskis and do something fun and active that isn't structured training.

Biddies cheesin at the top

Pretty nice weather considering all the rain lately! Lake Champlain is in the very back of this pic.

lovin' life!

Well, that's all for now, miss all you guys a lot and hope summer's going well! Claire I'm sorry to hear about your tonsils, don't worry I'm sure you will be back soon and feeling like a rockstar after being sick for so long :(

Claire's Turn

Hello all!!
I guess its my turn to add to the blog! My summer has taken some unique turns so training had to be postponed. When I got back from UNH about 3 days later I ended up in urgent care because i got so sick. I was put on antibiotics and then met with an Ear Nose Throat doctor. She told me to do antibiotics for 20 days and then my tonsils and adenoids would need to be removed. I had the surgery on Thursday and during surgery she found that my tonsils were completely saturated with infection even after being on antibiotics. The doctors think this means I've been fighting a sever infection for at least several months if not closer to a year. It's great to find out that there was a reason why I was always feeling sick and getting sick so easily! So now my tonsils and adenoids are out and I'm just eating popsicles and watching a lot of T.V. My big adventure was walking out side to get my cat today but every day is an improvement and within the next week I should be up and moving! I hope everyone is having a great summer and I can't wait to see everyone this fall!!
Love to all,
DJ Clur

Common Sense

Hi everyone!

Johnny- thanks for the reminder email:)

I hope everyone is having a wonderful start to their summer and enjoying doing (semi) brainless activities. It has been super hot (for Truckee, that is)... 90 for the last week! We went to my cousin's graduation in Sacramento, CA yesterday, and I about melted (that was for you, Tristan!)
My adventure of the week was classic rskiing into hail/lightning/thunderstorm/pouring rain. It went from 90 to 55 degrees in 20 minutes and I had to hide under a tree to avoid the hail and lightning! Lesson of the day? Turn around when there is a black cloud in front of you, even when it cuts your workout short ;)

I think that's all! Miss you all!

Cody Peak Hike and Snow Adventure

Hi all,

Yesterday I got to go out the the Jenny Lake Climbing Ranger and help them with snow Rescue Training. We practiced raising and lowering Sked which is a collapsible toboggan that would hold the injured patient. It was pretty cool and hard work at 10,000 ft. Just because we are training for ski racing doesn't mean you only have to run and rollerski this summer, make sure you're throwing in so exciting long adventure days swell. They are great for building up that L1 base!
